Review of A Brand: NYX Eyes & Lips

Today we are diving back into NYX, my all time favorite brand!  I love talking about all of my favorites they have, and if you haven’t checked out my post all about their face products, here’s the link to that post.

NYX has some of the greatest products, but of course, like any brand, it has a few products that could stand to be better. NYX is a one-stop brand. I find with some other drugstore brands they tend to stick to just face & lip products, or another mixture, but not many brands cover it all. NYX does, though. It ranges from primers to setting sprays and EVERYTHING in between.

Let’s go ahead and get started! I have a lot to cover!

  • Eye Primers/Bases

NYX’s face primers are my go to products so I thought it would be the same with their eye primers, as well.

I only have one of their bases, the Eyeshadow Base. It’s a cream product that comes in 4 shades. I was excited when I learned they came in different shades; White, White Pearl, Skin tone, and Black. I thought that was different from some of the other primers on the market that come in one shade only.

I picked up the skin tone shade, even though it seemed to be a couple shades darker than me in the container, I was hoping when blended out it would sheer out or become lighter. But, it did not. Not only did it not look any lighter, it didn’t blend very well.  It’s a dryer formula, one that sets down quickly and doesn’t move a lot, which I like in eye primers. But since the coloring was so off for my skin tone, it didn’t blend well with the rest of my makeup. Even after applying all of my eyeshadows you can still see the underlying orange beneath.

I’ve found that my eyeshadows do seem more vivid over this product but they still crease horribly on me. If set after application brushes move over it smooth, but if it’s not set overall it will remain extremely tacky and cause the brushes to skip sometimes.

  • Eyeshadow

I have a few of their single eyeshadows and I love all of them. Their mattes are soft and blend like a dream while their shimmers are pigmented and apply smoothly.

I do notice that they blend away quickly and almost disappear if blended too harshly. The shimmer loses it’s glimmer and just becomes a matte pigment that is harder to blend out in no time if you aren’t careful. I’ve also noticed with some of their shimmer eyeshadows that they have glitter particles.

They can be tricky to work with, but once you get used to using them they work amazingly well. Their color selection is great. They go from brights to nudes with both their Prismatic Pro Singles and Hot Singles lines. Their Nude Matte Singles line look is to die for. I can’t wait to pick them up along with some of their palettes that I’ve heard can be hits and misses. I’m definitely hoping to test them out for myself soon!

  • Eyeliner

NYX has many eyeliners. They go from liquids to pencils to creams to gels to their infamous Jumbo Eye Pencils that were all any Beauty Lover could talk about in the early 2010’s.

In my collection I have three from their lines, the Vivid Brights, Wonder Pencil and the Slide on, Glide On Liner.

I have the Vivid Violets liquid eyeliner, which I love! I wore it all day for Halloween this past year and it never moved, creased or transferred. The brush is great as well, it’s small enough you can focus on making a sharp wing but with pressure you can comfortably fill it in.

With the Wonder Pencil, it’s a multi-functional product. It use it to brighten your eyes, cover up small blemishes or outline your lips so you have sharp, crisp lines with your lip products. It’s creamy and stays comfortable wherever you wear it and is long lasting.

The Slide On, Glide On Liner is very pigmented, I have the shade white. It truly does glide onto the skin very nicely. It’s tacky to the touch and doesn’t really budge after application. This is great for the waterline, it’ll stay put and not move- but if it’s somewhere that needs to be blended it can be harder than other cream eyeliners.

  • Mascara

I have one mascara from NYX, it is from their Color Mascara line and it is in the color Brown. I wish they had this mascara in black as well, because it is such an amazing product. It lengthens, volumizes and gives a full-lash effect! I definitely recommend this mascara for an everyday natural but full lash look.

I really want to try some other shades from the line, they have a great color selection; pinks, purples, blues & greens! I’d also like to branch out and try their other mascaras. Their Skinny Mascara is calling my name…

  • Eyebrows

NYX really does it with two main products I feel everyone raves about them for; Liquid Lipsticks & Brows. Rightfully so, might I add.

Their brow products are my go to, I’ve tried many different eyebrow pencils but always find myself coming back to the NYX Micro Brow Pencil. I’ve heard it be compared to Anastasia Brow Wiz by multiple people. It mimics natural hair strokes and looks natural. I’ve recently noticed with other micro brow products they often run out a lot quicker than this one. The NYX Micro Brow Pencil lasts me almost twice as long as others do.

The Tame & Frame Brow Pomade is also something I find myself reaching for often. Its waxy yet creamy consistency allows me to do very different looks each day. I can achieve the bold Instagram Brow or I can do a natural brow. I have found this product can become dry and hard to work with, but with a little extra work you can still get use from it.

The Eyebrow Gel is something I reach for when I want my brows to be filled in and full. It is not a light product, it is what I use to really insure that my brows are filled in and sharp. I love doing Instagram Brows with this product, I find it’s the easiest way to achieve the look.

  • Lips

I have tried many of their Lip products. Lip liners, Liquid Lipsticks, Glosses, Matte Creams, & more. And while I usually love each and every product I have found a few that haven’t been as great as the others.

I love the lip liner. It glides on the and blends out beautifully. The pigmentation is nice and even though I have a dark shade, it isn’t too much- Even under products that are lighter. I don’t find that this prolongs the lip product put atop it, but, it does make the application smoother and more in-the-lines.

Their NYX Lingerie Liquid Lipsticks are my favorite go to lip products. When I’m indecisive but know I want a nude I always reach for that line. They have a nude for any look with any undertone. They are ready to support a bold look or enhance a natural one.

I have noticed with some of their shades, Embellishment, in my case, will clump up and flake off of my lips in the first 30 minutes of wear, while the rest of them stay put and comfortable on my lips all day. I’ve also noticed with the lightest shade I own, Lace Detail, it’s incredibly streaky for me. I love using this one with darker shades to do an ombre effect or lighten the color. Every other shade I own performs beautifully for me. It’s just those two I’ve had problems with. The others apply beautifully and remain comfortable on my lips for hours on end.

Their Soft Matte Lip Creams are nice for your everyday simple lip. They have a nice range of colors and good application, but I do find they don’t last as long as other products. If your lips aren’t well moisturized or if they don’t have a base they can begin to look dry and crumble on the lips. They wear comfortable and smell nice- those are always bonuses to me.

I have a love-hate relationship with their Liquid Suede Cream Lipsticks. They apply very very wet and dry down quick. I find they sometimes move around and transfer easier than other products and can apply extremely streaky. While, I do have those cons, on the other hand, they stay comfortable on the lips for hours, I never feel like my lips are masked like I sometimes do with fast drying lip products. They don’t settle into my lips like other cream products do, and they have a great color selection.

The last lip product of theirs I have is the Intense Butter Gloss. I have never been someone who loves glossy lips. They feel uncomfortable to me, and my hair always somehow ends up trapped in them and they can remain tacky. But with these glosses, it’s different. I don’t feel them sit on the lips like others have, they aren’t sticky but remain shining through the day.
